On 11 May 2008, I grabbed the dogs and camera, and jumped in the car and took a spontaneous drive up to Mt Macedon, an easy and scenic drive out of Melbourne along the Calder Highway. And by sheer luck/good fortune/fate/destiny/divine intervention - call it what you will, I happened to stumble upon this...
It was certainly a very unexpected and happy surprise. I was thrilled when one of the very kind gentlemen charged with looking after security on the property noticed me standing at the fenceline with my camera, and asked me if I would like to come in and take some photographs. At that point in time, I had no idea that this beautiful house was not really a house - but rather, just a facade, with scaffolding inside.
It turned out that this amazing structure was actually a movie prop - for the Nicolas Cage movie 'Knowing', which, as I was to discover that day, was being filmed in and around Melbourne at the time. The complete series can be viewed here.
Fast forward exactly five years to the very day, and on the 11 May 2013, I again found myself grabbing the dogs and camera, and making a spur of the moment decision to jump in the car and head off to Mt Macedon. I certainly wasn't expecting to come across any more movie props, but the Macedon Ranges are incredibly beautiful at this time of year - ablaze with stunning Autumn colour. I wasn't feeling 100%, and in hindsight, it was probably not the wisest of decisions to go, given that I've since spent this whole week in bed with the flu, but it was such a gorgeous day, I just couldn't resist the temptation to go. It's highly unusual for Melbourne to be experiencing 25 degree days so late in Autumn, and I wanted to make the most of the amazing weather while it lasted.
I was really only looking to take a few snapshots to upload for Facebook friends, but when I finally got around to editing the photos this afternoon, I started to play... and before I knew it, I'd created another new series.
This area is famed for it's beautiful, historic hill station properties. There are some architecturally stunning homes in Mt Macedon. Many of historical significance. Some of them have open gardens at selected times of the year. I would love, love, love to photograph and explore some of these properties. The Mount has such a magical, whimsical energy about it, and to my mind, nevermore so than in Autumn. There's just something so very special about this time of year.
I didn't have to think too long or hard to name this series. Really it named itself - 'Symphony'.
